NMHHRA members are encouraged to promote and advance the field of Healthcare Human Resources through providing internship opportunities to college students. 

 

Members considering having their companies provide internship opportunities are encourage to do so on a for-pay basis. Payment ensures time spent in the program is tracked by the employer and that meaningful work is assigned to the students. The student is then able to provide documented work history in Human Resources upon graduation. 

 

Through internships, students apply classroom education to real-world situations and that helps reinforce learning. Students gain exposure to different HR specialties or generalist work, depending upon the internship assignment; this experience enables them to make informed decisions regarding their future career path.

 

Your internship opportunity will be advertised through the University of New Mexico Anderson School Career Services, the UNM Student SHRM chapter, and through the NMHHRA web site. Students must apply for internships directly with the hiring company and will compete for the openings the same as any other applicant. This provides valuable experience in seeking employment. Additionally, as a customer of HR services, the student is better able to empathize with applicants when they eventually are in their role of HR service provider. 

 

One long-time participant organization reports that they have been able to offer regular employment to almost all their student interns over the past eight years. Although not a requirement of the program, regular employment often results and employers find that through this internship program they have a steady pipeline of excellent candidates for their entry-level HR openings.
